Tanks & Heat Exchange Selection Guide
Storage Tank & Heat Exchange Equipment Selection Guide
Tank material and volume selection, exchanger type and heat transfer area calculation — a scientific approach to specifying auxiliary equipment.
Tank types and selection
| Type | Material | Use cases | Selection advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vertical tank | Stainless steel/carbon steel/glass-lined | Bulk liquid storage | Size by volume stored, with 10% headroom |
| Horizontal tank | Stainless steel/carbon steel | Requires supports or burial | Confirm support type and load capacity |
| Mixing tank | Stainless steel/glass-lined | Requires mixing or blending | Confirm agitator speed and power |
| Insulated tank | Stainless steel/carbon steel | Requires temperature maintenance | Confirm insulation and heating method |
| 316L tank | 316L austenitic stainless steel | High cleanliness requirement | Pharma, bioprocessing, food |
Heat exchanger type comparison
| Type | Structure | Heat transfer efficiency | Use cases | Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shell & Tube Condenser | Tube bundle + shell | Medium | Steam condensation, process cooling | Wide application, high pressure rating |
| Spiral Plate Exchanger | Two plates rolled | High | Liquid-liquid heat transfer | Compact, efficient, resists clogging |
| Plate Heat Exchanger | Corrugated plates stacked | Very high | Liquid-liquid/gas-liquid | Easy to dismantle and clean, highest efficiency |
| Volumetric heat exchanger | Tank + heat exchange tubes | Medium | Domestic hot water/heating | Has storage, suits fluctuating loads |
| U-tube heat exchanger | U-tube bundle | Medium | High-temperature high-pressure duty | Withstands high temperature and pressure, thermal expansion |
Selection checklist
Selection confirmation
- 1.Confirm product corrosivity and choose the matching material
- 2.Confirm working temperature range and insulation
- 3.Confirm storage volume requirement and select a suitable capacity
- 4.Check tank weld quality; request NDT reports
- 5.Check manway, nozzle and valve integrity
- 6.Check agitator bearings and seals
- 7.Power up and test-run to confirm the agitator motor runs correctly
Equipment condition check
- - Request a powered test-run video or an on-site trial run
- - Inspect wear of main components and operating condition
- - Confirm all documentation and conformity certificates are complete
