MVR Evaporation Selection Guide
MVR Evaporator Selection Guide
A detailed look at MVR evaporator system composition, selection parameters, water quality assessment and typical industry applications.
MVR evaporator overview
MVR(Mechanical Vapor Recompression)— Mechanical Vapour Recompression. Secondary vapour is compressed to raise its temperature and returned to the evaporator for reuse, greatly reducing live steam consumption. Suitable for sites with large volumes of wastewater to concentrate and access to low-cost electricity.

Evaporator type comparison
| Type | Principle | Use cases | Features | Selection advice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MVR Evaporator | Mechanical recompression of secondary vapour | High-salinity wastewater, large evaporation volume | Low energy consumption, stable performance | First choice where power is available |
| Multi-effect Evaporator | Series multi-stage flash | Abundant but expensive steam | Relatively simple structure | Choose when low-cost steam is available |
| Falling Film Evaporator | Material flows downwards as a film | Heat-sensitive, low viscosity | Short residence time, high efficiency | Heat-sensitive duty |
| Forced Circulation Evaporator | Externally driven circulation | High concentration, high viscosity, prone to scaling | Anti-scaling, handles high concentration | High viscosity, high solids |
| Wiped-film evaporator | Blades force a thin film | Very high viscosity, heat-sensitive | Thin film, very short residence time | Extremely viscous, highly heat-sensitive |
Key selection parameters
| Parameters | Description | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| Feed water composition | TDS, hardness, COD, suspended solids, pH | Determines materials and pretreatment scheme |
| Throughput | Feed flow rate, m³/h | Determines equipment size |
| Evaporation rate | Water to be evaporated, kg/h | Core design parameter |
| Feed/discharge concentration | TDS and target concentration factor | Determines the number of effects |
| Material heat sensitivity | Whether prolonged high temperature is a concern | Determines effects (more effects → lower temperature) |
Industry applications
| Industry | Wastewater characteristics | Selection points |
|---|---|---|
| Chemicals | High salinity, high COD, complex composition | Adequate pretreatment; allow for scaling |
| Pharmaceuticals | High organics, complex composition | COD removal; pretreatment is important |
| Food | High organics, good biodegradability | High organics |
| Lithium battery/new energy | High salinity, high ammonia nitrogen | Focus on high-salinity treatment |
| Power plant desulfurization | High sulphur, high salinity | Corrosion-resistant materials are key |
| Zero liquid discharge | Extremely high salinity | MVR + crystallizer combination |
Selection checklist
Selection confirmation
- 1.Full water analysis report (TDS, hardness, pH, COD)
- 2.Determine throughput and evaporation rate
- 3.Confirm whether low-cost steam is available
- 4.Confirm the target concentration factor
- 5.Confirm the salt handling scheme
- 6.Compressor running hours and brand
- 7.Internal corrosion of the evaporator
- 8.Pipe and valve insulation condition
Equipment condition check
- - Request a powered test-run video or an on-site trial run
- - Inspect wear of main components and operating condition
- - Confirm all documentation and conformity certificates are complete
