Drying Equipment Selection Guide
Select the most suitable drying equipment and process parameters based on material state (slurry/powder/liquid) and heat sensitivity.
Drying equipment overview
Drying is a key process in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food and new materials. The core selection logic:Material state + heat sensitivity + output → drying method → equipment type。
Drying method comparison
| Method | Material state | Heat sensitivity | Output | Solvent recovery | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Double-cone vacuum | Powder/granule | Medium (vacuum, low temperature) | Small–medium | Yes (closed) | Pharmaceutical intermediates, chemical pigments |
| Vacuum rake | Slurry/paste/powder | Medium | Small–medium | Yes | Dyes, pesticides, pigments |
| Single-cone ribbon | High-viscosity slurry/paste | Medium | Medium–large | Yes | New-energy materials, food |
| Fluid bed | Powder/granule | Low–medium | Large | Difficult | Food, feed, chemicals |
| Spray drying | Liquid | Low | Large | Difficult | Milk powder, dyes, ceramics |
| Freeze drying | Any | Very high | Small–medium | Yes | Biopharmaceuticals, vaccines |
Three-step selection method
Slurry/paste → rake or ribbon dryer; powder/granule → double cone or fluid bed; liquid → spray or wiped film; highly heat-sensitive → freeze dryer
Output (small batch → double cone; high output → fluid bed/spray); moisture content (tight → freeze dryer); solvent recovery (required → closed vacuum drying)
Availability of steam, thermal oil and electric power; floor space; dust extraction and explosion-proof requirements; cleanliness class (pharma → clean-room type)
Selection checklist
Selection confirmation
- 1.Confirm the initial and target moisture content
- 2.Confirm heat sensitivity (maximum drying temperature)
- 3.Confirm whether the material is prone to oxidation, flammable or toxic
- 4.Confirm whether solvent recovery is required
- 5.Confirm output requirements and batch size
- 6.Check vacuum pump condition and pumping speed
- 7.Power up and test-run to confirm vacuum level and temperature control
Equipment condition check
- - Request a powered test-run video or an on-site trial run
- - Inspect wear of main components and operating condition
- - Confirm all documentation and conformity certificates are complete
